With the extended heat wave we find ourselves in this summer, one of my must-haves to prevent dehydration is an electrolyte drink. As an aside, it has also been proven to be a very effective remedy for mild dehydration. I have known about this concoction for years now, and I cannot recall where I discovered it, but what I can tell you is that it works QUICKLY, and it is EASY to prepare!
Ingredients:
1/2 tsp Himalayan salt or sea salt**
1/2 lemon
maple syrup to taste (you can substitute sugar or honey if need be)
1-1.5 cups water
Serving: 1 drink
Just plunk all the ingredients into a cup, stir, and ENJOY!
Small amounts of salt are often used to retain fluids in the body and balance the body's electrolytes. With a little snooping around I found some support for my remedy from Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, Adina Stanescu. In her Vitality magazine article, Beat the Summer Heat, she affirmed, "the combination of sweet, salty, and sour offers the best hydration."
According to our trusted friends at WikiAnswers, dehydration can occur in as little as 1-2 hours in very hot weather with extraneous activity and no fluid. So if you are feeling headachy, lethargic, dazed and confused, especially during the heat wave, I suggest you whip up one of these drinks.
Better yet, why not use it as a PREVENTION tactic to AVOID dehydration?
** It is best to avoid refined white salt because it contains heavy metals. Himalayan crystal salt or unrefined sea salt is a much better choice, as these contain a full complement of trace minerals and have no chemicals added.
